Overview of the acute blood cancer patient journey map, built in Miro
About the project
There are over 100 types of blood cancer, and each disease type comes with it's own unique journey. In order for Blood Cancer UK to support patients across all blood cancers, we needed to better understand patient journeys.
User research
I spoke to a number of patients, health care professionals and our own support service staff, via insight interviews, to begin to understand patient experience.
I also consulted data sources such as the Haematological Malignancy Research network - our funded patient registry and our database to understand how journeys differed at macro level.
Outcomes
It was clear that the biggest differentiator in patient journey was whether a patient was diagnosed with an acute (fast growing) or chronic (slow growing) blood cancer. I therefore built two distinct maps.
Within each map I included insight about journey stage, patient thoughts and emotions, where our services were already available and also where gaps in existing service provision were.
We now use the maps routinely to ensure we are building products and services that meet the unmet needs of blood cancer patients at each stage of their journey.
